College Advising
Scholar's college advising program is individualized & multi-faceted, directed at every element of the college admissions process and tailored to each individual student based upon his/her needs & preferences. Throughout the college application process, our advisory students are assisted in selecting schools, preparing applications & essays, studying for standardized tests, and organizing their senior year in order to ensure timely and thorough completion of all of their applications. All of our advisors are members of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC).
School Selection
Scholar's advisors initiate the advisory process by conducting evaluatory sessions in which a student's academic interests & goals, sports & extracurricular affiliations and abilities, academic & testing background, and personal preferences are discussed at length. Throughout this series of evaluatory meetings, our advisors perform personalized research through which they help each student to prepare a comprehensive portfolio. A student's final list of schools will reflect his/her educational goals & abilities, extracurricular interests, and personal specifications.
Our advisors are also able to work in conjunction with high school college counselors in order to perform supplementary research and propose additional schools for consideration. In addition, Scholar's advisors frequently plan college visits for students and their families based upon the school lists generated through these evaluatory meetings.
Guidance through the Junior Spring
During the junior spring & summer, advisory students, in conjunction with their advisors, prepare an initial list of schools. Advisors also ensure that, when possible, advisory students complete college visits, after which the list is finalized and early application options are discussed. Based upon testing background and the requirements of their selected schools, advisory students will finalize a standardized testing schedule to ensure that their testing goals are met in a timely manner. Students then have the option to enroll in tutorials or courses in preparation for spring standardized testing. Finally, advisors review juniors' academic transcripts and discuss class selection for the senior year, proposing & providing academic tutoring if and when necessary.
All advisory juniors should complete their junior years with a firm list of schools, a standardized testing schedule, and specific academic goals for their senior years. Over the summer, our advisors recommend that juniors complete at least one college admissions essay in order to alleviate the workload of their senior fall.
Guidance through the Senior Fall
During the senior fall, advisory students review & confirm their school lists and finalize any early application decisions. With their advisors, they then prepare an application completion calendar. Throughout the fall & winter, advisors maintain regular contact with students in order to ensure that they are abiding by their application calendars, adhering to their testing schedules, and performing solidly in their academics. During the senior spring, if and when necessary, advisors will recommend & schedule academic tutoring and standardized test preparation. Additionally, advisors will provide guidance for and review all college admissions essays and short answer questions.
The role of the college advisor is to successfully guide & support his/her students in selecting colleges that are the right fit academically, extracurricularly, and socially. A successful college advisor is able to help each of his/her students find a school that meets his/her needs & preferences while also lending to the development of fundamental organizational, planning, & writing skills. At Scholar, we are proud to see our advisory students matriculate to schools about which they are excited and proud to attend.

Assistance with the Common Application
The Common Application is used for admission by more than 400 colleges and universities. Our tutors and advisors will help students prepare and complete their Common Application for Fall of 2012 admission.
The Common Application consists of several components, including information forms, a personal essay, a short answer, two teacher recommendations, and an extracurricular activity and work experience form. Through one-on-one sessions, students will receive guidance for their personal statement, an essay that can be used for most, if not all, of their applications. Students will also be assisted in preparing a student version resume that highlights their leadership positions, extracurricular activities, work experience, and unique interests. Because many students struggle with the organizational aspects of the admissions process, these meetings will also help students complete and file student and family information forms, prepare recommendation forms, select teachers to provide recommendations, and prepare a schedule for completing supplements and additional application components, such as learning statements, athletic videos and resumes, and art portfolios.
Assistance with the Common Application is available, with sessions generally scheduled in the summer and fall. (For students applying to the UC schools, similar support is offered.)
